Creative Commons Attribution License (CC-BY) Abstract Objective Supraglottic laryngeal carcinomas are often accompanied by occult cervical lymph node metastasis. The aim of this study was to explore predictive factors of cervical lymph node metastasis in clinically negative supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma. Methods and materials From January 1990 to December 2009, a series of 221 patients with clinically negative cervical nodal metastases in supraglottic laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma were treated at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center. The overall survival rate and occult cervical lymph node metastasis-free survival rate were calculated using a life-table method. The survival curves were constructed by the Kaplan–Meier method and compared using a log-rank test. The relative significant factors in predicting occult cervical lymph node metastasisfree survival were assessed by multivariate Cox proportional hazards model. Results The 5-year overall survival rate in 221 patients was 58.6%. The 5-year overall survival rates of the positive cervical lymph node metastasis group Prediction of occult cervical lymph node metastasis in clinically negative supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma

Rate of Occult Cervical Lymph Node Involvement in Supraglottic Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Introduction: To assess the rate of cervical lymph node involvement in patients with supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with no lymph node in clinical assessments and radiological studies. Materials and Methods: Fifty-six patients who underwent elective dissection of the cervical lymph node of the second through fourth level were enrolled, and pathologic evaluation of the dissected lymp...

DETERMINATION OF THE PREVALENCE OF OCCULT NECK LYMPH NODE INVOLVEMENT IN PATIENTS WITH LARYNGEAL SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Background & Aims: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) accounts for 85% of laryngeal cancers. In some cases, lymph nodes do not show any specific symptoms despite being involved by cancer. Previous studies showed that patients undergoing selective neck lymph node dissection (SND) had significantly lower recurrence rates. We investigated the prevalence of occult neck lymph node involvement in patients...

Objectives: Presence/absence of cervical lymph node metastasis plays a critical role in prognosis and survival of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). This study was designed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of computed tomography (CT) scan for detection of cervical lymph node metastasis in oral SCC in comparison with histopathological analysis after neck dissection Methods: In...

Incidence of level IIB lymph node metastasis in supraglottic laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma with clinically negative neck--a prospective study.

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of level IIB metastasis in patients with clinically negative (N0) necks with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the supraglottic larynx and to assess whether level IIB lymph nodes may be left undissected in such patients. This was a prospective analysis of a case series. METHODS A prospective analysis of 68 patients with SCC of...
